Fosun Tourism's China Business Strongly Outperforms the Industry During the National Day Holiday

10 October 2021, Fosun Tourism Group (“Fosun Tourism” or the “Group”, HKEX stock code: 1992), one of the world’s leading leisure-focused integrated tourism enterprises, is pleased to announce that Club Med China Resorts, Atlantis Sanya and Thomas Cook Lifestyle Platform, the Group’s core businesses, again delivered an outstanding performance during the National Day Golden Week holiday[1] following the Mid-Autumn Festival. These businesses performance outperformed the industry compared with 2019 in a number of key indicators including business volume, number of tourists, occupancy rate and average daily bed rate. Among them, Atlantis Sanya’s seven-day average occupancy rate was as high as 93.9%, exceeding its average occupancy rate of National Day holiday in 2019 by six percentage points. The average occupancy rate of the eight resorts of Club Med China was also as high as 74%, exceeding its average occupancy rate of National Day holiday in 2019 by seven percentage points. The newly opened Club Med Lijiang resort also recorded an occupancy rate of 80% during the National Day holiday.

 

 

According to the “2021 National Day Holiday Travel Summary Report” issued by Trip.com, a travel craze was seen throughout the country during the National Day holiday with robust demand for short-haul trips and long-haul journeys including staycations in cities, in-depth travel in nearby areas, long-haul trips in local provinces and trans-provincial long-haul travel. Among these excursions, nearby short trips and long-haul journeys in local provinces increased dramatically, while village visits and family leisure travel were most popular. According to the data published by the Data Center of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China[2], 88.3% of the tourists traveled within the less-than-300km circle. The proportion of tourists visiting surrounding villages of cities and country parks increased by 4.6 percentage points and 5.7 percentage points year-on-year, respectively. In addition, “immersive vacations” featuring stays in hotel and guesthouses was well-received by tourists in Hainan, Guangxi and Yunnan.

 

According to the calculation of the Data Center of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China[2], following the advocate by the Ministry of Education and affected by the local epidemic situation, the total number of domestic tourists in the country reached 515 million during the National Day holiday in 2021, representing 70.1% of the number recorded in the same period before the pandemic on a comparable basis. The popularity of travel during the National Day holiday has driven the vigorous recovery in domestic tourism revenue. During the National Day period, domestic tourism revenue was RMB389.06 billion, representing 59.9% of the number recorded in the same period before the pandemic on a comparable basis.

 

According to the calculation of the Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Sanya[3], during the National Day holiday in 2021, the occupancy rate of Haitang Bay Tourist Hotel was 79.04%.

 

Complementing the recent popularity of major theme parks in China, Atlantis Sanya has been well-received by tourists due to its excellent operations and reputation as well as a wide array of special recreational activities. During the National Day holiday in 2021, the revenue of Atlantis Sanya returning to 95.2% of the number recorded in the same period of 2019[4] on a comparable basis, and the seven-day average occupancy rate was 93.9%, which outperformed Haitang Bay’s average occupancy rate by 15 percentage points. The total visits exceeded 148,000, returning to 86% of the number recorded in the same period before the pandemic on a comparable basis. Among them, Number of visits to The Lost Chambers Aquarium, Aquaventure Waterpark and Dolphin Cay was around 72,000. During the 2021 National Day Holiday, Atlantis Sanya launched various featured experience activities. Aquarium held large-scale mermaid underwater performances every day. Waterpark organized a variety of performing arts activities such as laser water curtain show, water trapeze show and fireworks show. For catering features, CIRQUE DE CUISINE’ buffet dinner at Kaleidoscope & Saffron and a large-scale tuna fish cutting ceremony, plus over 100 kinds of gourmet food and various types of drinks were served, and special performing arts activities were also held on the spot.

 

For the Club Med resorts in China, the business volume during the National Day holiday in 2021 increased by 5% against the National Day holiday in 2019 on a comparable basis. The seven-day average occupancy rate of Club Med’s resorts was 74%. Benefitting from the strong product offerings and robust demand for nearby travel, the average occupancy rate of Club Med Joyview Golden Coast, Club Med Joyview Yanqing, Club Med Joyview Anji achieved 92%, 83% and 84% respectively, as compared to that in the same period of 2019.

 

Club Med Lijiang resort, which opened on 25 September, was located at the foot of Jade Snow Mountain, the lowest latitude snow mountain in the northern hemisphere. Boasting the largest indoor waterpark among all Club Med All-inclusive resorts in China, with an indoor sports space of close to 700 square metres, and its original ecological beauty, ethnical and immersive featured experience, the Club Med Lijiang resort has attracted a large number of visitors. Around 150 rooms opened in the first phase, it has attained an occupancy rate of 80% during the National Day holiday.

 

The Thomas Cook Lifestyle Platform is a one-stop scenario-based resort life services platform under the Group. As of the end of the National Day holiday, the application cumulated approximately 2 million downloads. Moreover, the platform kicked off a new family promotion campaign with the theme of " Light Up Better Life with China Chic". It provides users with more than 100 "China chic" themed hotel products and a series of national cultural specialized lifestyle retail merchandise, to introduce "China chic" in all aspects, catering for the demand of young consumers.

 

Riding on the robust demand for short-haul trips and long-haul journeys, the Miniversity’s different series of programmes, namely the Shanghai short-term camps and the Lijiang humanities and nature-themed parent-child camps have been widely welcomed by consumers. During the National Day holiday of 2021, its business volume increased by 261% year-on-year, and the number of trainees exceeded 1,200, increased by 1.8 times as compared to the same period of 2020.
